4 Things New Van Dwellers Should Know Before Traveling

-

Van life has become popular among many Americans for several reasons. Yes, it can offer you the chance to leave behind the big city life and save on rent, but this life isn’t meant for everyone.

You may see photos on social media of couples and friends who live in a van. You’ll likely see them having the best times of their lives, but what you don’t see is the reality of living in a van.

If you plan on becoming one of these van dwellers, you’ll need to know several things. Read on to learn four things you should know before traveling in a van.

1. The Costs of Being Van Dwellers

If you’re seeking to travel for months on end, you can move into a van. Living in a van can help you save on plane tickets, but there are other costs to factor in that you must be aware of.

First, you’ll need to buy a van if you don’t already own one. You may have to convert it into a travel van that has all the amenities and comforts you need to travel.

You’ll have to ask yourself if it’s more feasible to buy a used van. If you have a large group, you may even want to check used RVs. The point is to have a van that has space for your essentials and travelers.

You’ll need to budget for more than just the upfront cost. Don’t forget to factor in gas and maintenance. Set aside money to restock food and water.

2. Embracing Each Situation

Van life isn’t always all it’s cracked up to be. You may not always have the ability to park the van next to those picturesque beaches or mountains. You might end up parking in a shopping center or on the side of the highway.

The good news is that there are different apps you can use to find ideal overnight camping options. The last thing you want to get is a fine for illegal overnight parking.

3. Establish a Routine

Most van dwellers have a job. They don’t just have fun as they need to pay for the costs that come with traveling in a van. If you have a job, you need to make time to work as you’ll want to have some peace and quiet.

Have a cleaning routine as well. Wipe down all areas and sweep away dirt and dust. Keep in mind that you’re sharing a van with others, so you don’t want to be a bad roommate.

4. Van Safety

You need to think about security. It’s a good idea to install some kind of security system with cameras. Make sure your van has strong locks and secure windows.

You’ll also need to protect yourself from the wildlife. Secure all your food as you don’t want any bears breaking into your van.
