The Different Types of Homeschoolers in the World

Education has changed over the years. Parents now have various options outside of the public school system.

Before, the only options were costly private schools. Obtaining a scholarship was possible but came with much competition for available dollars.

Today, it’s estimated that the United States has over 3.7 million homeschooled students.

Once you’ve decided to homeschool, the second big decision parents have to make is choosing a homeschool style for their family to follow. There are different types of homeschoolers. The term refers to the different styles and homeschool methods for educating a child.

Many homeschool parents make this decision subconsciously, simply picking the best program or curriculum. They don’t figure in the program’s philosophy or the impact on the child’s learning or family values.

In this article, we’ll explore the different types of homeschoolers worldwide. Keep reading to learn more about your choices.

What Do Types of Homeschoolers Mean?

Homeschooling is great because you can tailor your child’s learning to your needs, teaching style, and how you want your kids to learn. This often leads to different “styles” of homeschooling. For example, a Montessori home environment is a type of education philosophy of a homeschooler.

Here is a list of other examples:

  • Classical homeschooling
  • Eclectic homeschooling
  • Traditional homeschooling
  • Unschooling
  • Worldschooling

Each homeschool style has something that helps in educating a child while maintaining family values.

Classical Homeschooling

The classical homeschool approach is about teaching kids to think independently. With the “trivium” model, kids go through four phases of learning:

  • The grammar phase
  • The critical learning phase
  • The logic phase
  • The abstract learning phase

It’s a language-centered, literature-centered approach that lots of homeschooling parents use.

Eclectic Homeschooling

Mixing and matching different homeschooling materials is what makes eclectic homeschooling so unique. It’s a one-of-a-kind learning style that works best for each child based on what they’re good at, how they learn, and what interests them.

Traditional Homeschooling

In the simplest terms, homeschooling is similar to public or private schools because it’s the type of education parents are most comfortable with. New homeschooling families often start by buying school supplies, such as textbooks, desks, and wall posters.

They then follow the same curriculum as their district’s local schools.

Unschooling is a type of home education where you don’t have to stick to a specific curriculum. Instead, you let your child’s interests and curiosity guide the way they learn. It’s a way of learning that’s not as passive and unstructured as the name might seem.

Homeschool parents gravitate to this homeschooling method when educating a child with a high IQ.

Worldschooling is a way of learning that believes students can get the most out of their education by traveling the world. Families pool their resources and schedule group trips together so their children can gain real-time learning experiences.
